Formatted abstract       This thesis focuses on the post 1978 reform period and investigates possible determinants of China's trade in agricultural products. China's trade behaviour does, at a very aggregated level, conform to its comparative advantage, but individual commodities do not appear to be traded in optimal proportions. Domestic supply characteristics seem to influence the decision to participate in international trade, but price considerations also seem to be important to the chinese authorities. Australia has not been very successful in exploiting the growth in China's trade activity. The results suggest that Australia has lost competitiveness on the international market place and also has concentrated its export activity on commodities that did not
experience growth in Chinese import demand.
