Formatted abstract Given the recent volatility of the exchange rate after the floating of the Australian Dollar, exchange risk management has become an important component in the financial management of Australian export coal companies.

This thesis endeavours to investigate the implications of this exchange risk on both the short-term and long-term operations of the coal exporter. It will also investigate methods by which this exchange risk can be eliminated or reduced in the short- and long-term.

Finally, possible innovations applicable to the coal exporter are looked at with a view to future direction of risk minimisation in this industry.
