Conclusions
• A proper range of particle size should be chosen for gas adsorption measurement on coals to shorten the experimental time and to represent the coal block.
• For the chosen size range, adsorption isotherms should be reported with the ash content (or mineral matter).
• Degassing conditions such as T, vacuum P and duration should be clearly stated.
• Argon isotherms at 87 K can not be used to characterise mesopores of coals. CO2 at 273 K up to elevated pressures is recommended.
• The role of hydrocarbons in coal structure is significant in gas adsorption and kinetic studies, which requires a further investigation.
