Formatted abstract Schizophrenia constitutes a very high proportion of mental illness. The history of treatment is a most disappointing chapter in medicine. The survey of the literature shows that the progress in therapy has been achieved by alternations between the physiological and the psychological study of man with the focus of attention to-day veering towards psychology. A test battery designed to measure intelligence and to determine to what extent inner striving have met the challenge of the real world was applied to a group of patients at the Brisbane Mental Hospital Goodna. The result disclosed a wide variety of clinical patterns in schizophrenia and pointed to a need for giving a closer attention to the variety of types and a greater use of all psychic material.
