Formatted abstract This study considers the ex-dividend day price and volume behaviour of equity shares in Australia under the new dividend imputation legislation. Two competing explanations are evaluated. Price behaviour is not consistent with many of the tax based theory's predictions. Volume behaviour is consistent with the short term trading explanation, after allowing for sample size.
