This thesis examines the controversial issue of the macroeconomic impact of aid. Early theories of economic growth and different theoretical perspective on the impact of aid have been analysed. Empirical evidence on aid-growth debate is critically approached. The aid environment appears crucial and the debate is best resolved through detailed regional or country study. The case of the impact of aid and other unrequited transfers on the key macroeconomic variables in the context of the South Pacific economies is presented. Time-series and cross-sectional data was used for seven South Pacific countries. The pool data technique was implemented to test the relationship between changes in GNP, savings, investment, private and government consumption and aid and remittances. The results showed a long-run consistent relationship between dependent and explanatory variables. However, some problems with national income accounting conventions saving and investment functions should be adjusted to take account of consumption financed from foreign capital sources.
