Formatted abstract Vietnam has not been very successful in its econmic devlopment in the past 15 years and the level of development in 1990 is low. Fundamental changes in the institutional structures are taking place and the country has adopted an outward oriented strategy in recent times. The structural constraints remain and high inflation is still a serious problem. The development patterns are also discussed in this thesis, outlining prospects for Vietnam's economic development in the new economic environment.
