Formatted abstract In this thesis an attempt has been made to investigate the shearing properties of bagasse to see if shear failure in the bagasse could be a possible cause of the phenomenon of reabsorption.

The field of soil mechanics has been studied and soil mechanics techniques have been applied to the testing of the shear strength of bagasse. Uniaxial shear tests and triaxial shear tests using both the standard soil testing apparatus and a specially designed triaxial apparatus have been described. An attempt has also been made to establish a theory of failure for bagasse.

A study of the coefficient of friction of bagasse on grooved and flat plates at pressures up to 3000 lb per in2 has been made. Using the results obtained in these friction tests an attempt has been made to predict the maximum horizontal force that can be developed in a mill.
