Formatted abstract
Willburn’s book does add to our understanding of Victorian subjectivity in interesting ways. In particular, it alerts the reader to the use of mysticism as a critique of liberalism and as a venue in which those denied agency by their society could explore identity, create communities, and accrue spiritual and cultural capital.
