Information on the plasma concentrations of prostacyclin and thromboxane A2 during fetal and neonatal life are not available. Such information is of importance since these compounds have potent cardiovascular actions. We have therefore measured the plasma concentrations of 6-keto-prostaglandin F(1α) (6-keto-PGF(1α), thromboxane B2 (TXB2), and their more stable metabolites, during the perinatal period. There was no significant difference between umbilical, arterial and venous levels of 6-keto-PGF(1α) or TXB2. By the sixth day after delivery neonatal plasma concentrations of TXB2 had increased significantly (p<0.005) compared with umbilical arterial levels, while 6-keto-PGF(1α) levels had risen by 50% although this difference was not significant. Circulating concentrations of 6-keto-PGF(1α) and TXB2 were similar in term neonates on the sixth day of life and in pre-term neonates at 2-6 days of life.
