Formatted abstract
Recrystallization of [Fe([9]aneS3)Cl3] from hot acetonitrile or methanol resulted in the isolation of a red crystalline product subsequently identified as [Fe([9]aneS3)2] [FeCl4] · 2H2O which has been characterized by X-ray diffraction. The bimetallic complex salt is composed of an octahedral, low-spin Fe11 cation and tetrahedral, high-spin Fe11 anion. Reduction of the metal centre by the ligand and formation of the thermodynamically stable complex [Fe([9]aneS3)2]2- in solution is proposed.
