Abstract Economic studies in health care are of increasing importance. Unfortunately these studies are often plagued by an unacceptable level of arbitrariness. Health economists have been trying to raise standards by publishing guidelines, but this, while useful, is not sufficient, in addition health economists will have to be more aware of the value judgements underlying their methods, and be prepared to adjust their methods to reflect empirically measured preferences.
