Abstract/Summary Earth scientists are probing the predictability issue of earthquakes from basically two directions: one group of researchers uses the statistical physics based methods such as LURR (Load-Unload Response Ratio), AMR (Accelerate seismic Moment Release) and Pattern Informatics. They ignore the details inside the crust but instead only observe the change of the crust as a whole. By comparing the changing pattern of a target block of crust with the pattern in other areas where the history of the pattern are known, they can deduce the state of the crust and make temporal prediction of the stability of that crust.
