Formatted Abstract/Summary

Despite a growing in the history of Queensland, there has been, until now, no documentary collection available for readers to form their own judgements about the past. Through primary source documents, both written and pictorial, this volume provides a general survey of the key issues that have affected Queensland since European settlement.

As well as convict and pioneering Queensland, there are sections on Aboriginal Queensland, historical trends in the economy-such as the growth of pastoralism and the spread of the sugar industry- and the state’s political and social evolution. The variety of commentators is extremely broad- there are politicians, of course, and also explorers, convicts, journalists, Chinese and many others, all chosen because their diary entry, letter, article, debate or report contains a vivid description of a contemporary state of affairs.

A wealth of knowledge and enjoyment can be gained from reading what Queenslanders themselves (and outsides) have had to say about their state. What emerges strongly from this collection is a sense of the past that is fresh and vital. There are more than a hundred outstanding illustrations-documents in their own right, and many of them never published before.
