Drained and undrained triaxial tests were carried out on natural soft Pisa clay, anisotropically reconsolidated at its in situ state (O), at a normally consolidated state (S), and at two stress states (A) and (P), perturbed towards the active and passive deviatoric directions, respectively, reproducing the loading conditions applied during an excavation.  The stress-strain-time behaviour of the clay in (A) and (P) is examined with reference to the recent strain history of the clay.  The effect of ageing at (P) on a subsequent undrained test in extension is illustrated in terms of the equivalent Overconsolidation Ratio (OCREQU).
