Aerobic granular sludge for treating domesticwastewater was studied to investigate itsapplication for biological nitrogen and phosphorusremoval. Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorusremoval was promoted by operating the reactorwith a low dissolved oxygen concentration. A fullygranular system was achieved after 50 days ofoperation by progressively decreasing the settlingtime and increasing the hydraulic residence time (HRT). The reactor operated for 152 days withstable granulation. The HRT was reduced to 9.6 hwhile achieving 99% and 98% P and N removalrespectively. This study demonstrates the keystrategies of granule formation and its potential forachieving biological nitrogen and phosphorusremoval during the treatment of domesticwastewater
