Abstract/Summary Hermann Diedrich Sporing, a former surgeon, voyaged with Captain James Cook on the HMS Endeavour voyage of 1768-1771 to the South Pacific. Employed by Joseph Banks as a naturalist, secretary and artist, Mr. Sporing was one of the four medical "gentlemen of the faculty" who sailed with Cook. Hermann Sporing was a Swede from Firmish-speaking Turku (Abo in Swedish). Recent translation of Finnish documents has provided extra details of his life; and have enabled a perspective of his contributions to Cook's voyage to be drawn.
