Abstract/Summary In Queensland, Australia there is no legal requirement for beginning teachers to be allocated a mentor in their schools. Policy documents informing the profession of teaching explicitly refer to the necessity of nurturing those new to the profession. Key to the development and growth of newcomers to the teaching profession is the informal exchange of ideas and knowledge between colleagues – essentially through the functioning of a community of practice. The larger study, on which this paper has drawn, investigated how beginning teachers, specifically those from a non-English speaking background were positioned within an English speaking community of teaching practice.
