Abstract In the essay 'Some Methods of Architectural Criticism" (1893), the Melbourne architect, Harold Desbrowe-Annear, not only stressed the need to educate the general public in matters architectural but also links this desire to the broader English debate on the status of architecture as a profession or art argued in the editorial pages of the London Times (1891). The significance of Desbrowe-Annear's thesis, it will be argued, is that it draws out the import of "lay criticism" to the system of the arts advocated by the Memorialists and their attempt to position the education of the public as an alternative to the registration of the architect. Conceptually linked to the Memorialists's attempts to assert the artistic status of the craftsmanship of building, judgement in this instance is positioned not as a function of a cultivated taste but the product of practical actions and utility
