Abstract/Summary In recent years there has been a noticeable increase in the diversity of backgrounds, abilities and aspirations of students entering first year mathematics courses at The University of Queensland. With the number and diversity of students entering Australian universities increasing, it is important to know what level of mathematical understanding they bring with them. This study investigated University of Queensland first year students' mathematical abilities.
