Abstract E-waste is a global issue and its disposal has become as significant as the disposal of solid waste. Despite the Basel Convention on the Control of Transborder Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (1992) – that 170 countries have signed up to (with the notable exception of the USA) – its violation is unfortunately commonplace, even by countries that are signatories to the convention. This is not entirely surprising given the global mountain of hazardous e-waste that the developed world, in particular, is not keen to keep in its own back yard.
