Formatted abstract This work was undertaken with a view to producing a connected account of an important aspect of education in Queensland which had previously been dealt with only in official reports, or incidentally in works dealing with other aspects of education.

Information was collected from the annual reports on education made to Parliament each year since I860, from the pages of journals published by teachers or their Union, from the Press, from-- Parliamentary debates, from University publications, and from the records of the Department of Education and Teachers' College. Further information was obtained from non-State sources by Interview and inquiry. The information was discussed with teachers and others to verify it, expand it, and throw light on it which was not always apparent otherwise.

By these means the stages through which the training of teachers in Queensland passed were determined. At each stags, and in the final chapter, an attempt was made to trace the pattern of development and the causes of such development. Finally, some desirable future developments were suggested, with comment on the possibility of their attainment.
