Key points
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is much more common than originally thought, with community surveys identifying that one in seven Australian adults has at least one marker of kidney damage or dysfunction.

The emphasis on CKD management in general practice should most appropriately focus on early to moderate CKD where CKD is under-recognised and where early detection and best care protocols can make a significant difference to the burden of early death and end-stage kidney failure.
