Abstract This paper reports on a study ofchildprotection practice in a non-government childprotection organisation in inner Sydney. The purpose ofthe study was to explore workers' perceptions ofcritical issues in childprotection andfamily support work infamilies affected by parental substance use. The findings raise issues about prevalence ofsubstance use issues in childprotection work, the risks posed to workers in this domain ofpractice, and the importance ofimproved co-operation amongst agencies involved with these families affected by parental substance use. Future research directions for improving childprotection andfamily support practice with families affected by parental substance use are considered.
