Abstract/Summary A new turbulent combustion modelling approach –the multiple mapping conditioning (MMC)- is applied for the first time to a realistic inhomogeneous reactive flow configuration (Sandia Flame D). MMC combines the probability density function (PDF) and the conditional moment closure (CMC) methods via the application of a mapping closure to a prescribed reference space. The evolution equation for the mapping function is solved here using a reference space with a single mixture-fraction-like variable. It is shown that statistics of the mapped reference field are an accurate model of the statistics of the physical field. Mean mixture fraction and its variance and conditional dissipation can be predicted satisfactorily throughout the computational domain.
