Abstract/Summary The subject of this report is a pilot study investigating the effects of the Infant Feeding Support Service (IFSS) on the breastfeeding rates in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. The IFSS was a postnatal, primarily telephone based, breastfeeding support service for mothers designed around the results of the needs analysis conducted in phase 1. The aims of phase 2 were to: a) evaluate the effectiveness of the IFSS, in terms of its effect on breastfeeding duration and upon the level of satisfaction with the service, as reported by the mothers participating in the services; b) identify the reasons provided by mothers for discontinuing breastfeeding, the problems they reported experiencing with breastfeeding , and the contacts they reported with other infant feeding supports; c) analyse the referrals made by the IFSS to other supporst services; and d) examine the effect of the birth hospital within each of these aims.
