The town of Springsure is located 66 kilometres south of Emerald in the Central Highlands region of Queensland. The area is noted for its commercial sapphire fields and Aboriginal rock art galleries as well as the Carnarvon National Park and the Blackdown Tablelands National Park. Agriculture includes grain, oilseeds, cotton, citrus, grapes and beef on the rich black clay soil. The local landmark Mount Zamia is a feature of the town. Ludwig Leichhardt explored the area on his 1844-45 expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. The town of Springsure was surveyed and gazetted in 1863.
