Title Eastern end, railway station, Kuranda
Abstract/Summary The station consists of a number of detached buildings built on a raised platform between two sets of tracks. The largest is the passenger station building which contains a row of adjoining rooms. Subsidiary structures also located on the island platform include a footbridge at the western end. Extensive gardens have been established around the buildings and along the platform. It is one of the earliest stations to be built in Australia using standard concrete units and is the oldest remaining example of its type in Queensland. Additional Notes Kuranda is 25km northwest of Cairns in Far North Queensland and is surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest. Kuranda was surveyed in 1888 in anticipation of development which would accompany the arrival of the railway. The building of this railway line and the road from Cairns paved the way for trade and the movement of people over the mountains. The Cairns-Kuranda Railway was constructed between 1882 and 1891 and even today is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude.
