Additional Notes
Karumba is situated on the mouth of the Norman River and is the centre of the fishing industry in the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is 69km from Normanton and 443km north of Cloncurry. Karumba's existence is connected to the fact that it is built on sand ridges which allow direct access to the river and the sea. The town is surrounded by flat wetlands which extend inland for approximately 30km. These wetlands provide a habitat for saltwater crocodiles and a vast array of bird species.
