William Dart grew sugar cane on the banks of the Brisbane River at St Lucia from the 1860s. Couldridge Mill, often referred to as Dart’s Mill, is said to have been the first sugar mill in Queensland. It was situated at the foot of Mill Road, what is now part of Sir William MacGregor Drive at The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus. The last of the old mill disappeared in the floods of 1893.
