Over the last decade Indigenous communities and organizations have taken a lead in developing holistic concepts of mental health, specifically social, emotional, cultural and spiritual wellbeing. 'Wellbeing' emphasizes the importance of thinking about the whole community, not just the individual with an 'illness' or 'mental health problem'. This way of thinking draws on traditional ideas of family and social relatedness, as well as ideas that have come from community development and public health (Hunter & Garvey, 1998). These are critical elements of mental health promotion and prevention, which is only now being given serious attention within the mental health agenda of the wider Australian society. In this article recent developments in this field nationally will be described and definitions of relevant concepts will be provided along with examples of different types of mental health promotion and prevention intervention. The article will conclude with an example of developing a mental health promotion and prevention strategy at a local community level.
