The 15 essays collected in this book are the result of a conference held in Jerusalem in June 1996. Judging from the quality of the papers, the conference must have been an intellectually stimulating and exciting one. The book is divided into three sections: translation, reception and appropriation of the Bible. With Christian influence in China becoming increasingly significant in the new millennium, all three topics are important. Even though most of the essays deal with the history of the Bible in China, this history reveals a host of issues that are still relevant for contemporary times. Indeed, Wolfgang Kubin in the last chapter asserts that "the entire Chinese intelligentsia, being jointly responsible for the revolution of 1949, is under the influence of Christianity" (p. 415).
