Abstract/Summary Where graphical figures in architectural drawing are read for their symbolic allusions, those figures might seem less instrumental to an architectural design and rather more an aesthetic choice. And yet if we read such figures in drawing indexically, as they prescribe form and space, we come to recognize other kinds of meanings, more specifically architectural, that might be associated to particular choices of figuration. This paper brings attention to the nature of graphical figures in architectural drawing; particularly their hybrid symbolic and indexical forms. It moves beyond a symbolic reading of figure to show how graphical figures in architectural drawing can sustain various kinds of reading. In making alternative readings we reveal how graphical figures in the design process are used as operations rather than simply as signs.
