This is a scholarly article about the cinema of Basque filmmaker Julio Medem. The article problematises received notions of high/low art in relation to Medem's poetics. An analysis of aesthetic style and political commitment in his film Lovers of the Arctic Circle reveals that both aspects seem to be complementary. A detailed reading of the film's historical context also reveals that some apparently incongruous elements of the visual aesthetics of the film are connected to interpretations of Basque history at a deeper level.
