Additional Notes Blair Athol is located 22km north of Clermont and consists mainly of a large, open-cut coal mine. The 29m wide coal belt at Blair Athol was discovered in 1864. In 1909 the Blair Athol Coal and Timber Company absorbed a number of smaller underground coalmines to become the first large company to undertake coalmining operations at Blair Athol. The township built for the employees eventually disappeared as the mine expanded and they were relocated to Clermont. The mine is now Australia’s largest exporter of thermal coal.
