Abstract/Summary The Emerald Railway Station in Clermont Street is a National Trust classified building. Made out of chamferboard, its features include a semi-circular roof to the central portico, iron lacework and cast-iron columns. Constructed c1900-c1901, its design is attributed to Henrik Hansen. Other surviving examples of Hansen’s work include the following railway stations: Archer Park, Rockhampton; Mount Morgan; Shorncliffe and South Brisbane. Curved steps lead to the central portico of the main entry. The curved pedimented roof is supported by twenty-four cast iron columns which are grouped in pairs. Additional Notes Emerald is located in Central Queensland, 266 kilometres west of Rockhampton. The town was established in 1879 as a base for the railway line from Rockhampton to the Central West. Little remains of Emerald’s early buildings as the town experienced major fires in 1936, 1940, 1954 and 1968. The region has a diverse industry base including coal mining, grazing, agriculture (grain and cotton), horticulture (grapes and citrus) and gem fossicking.
