Additional Notes The town of Innisfail, established in 1880, and with a population today of about 8000, is situated on the North and South Johnstone Rivers in the centre of the Johnstone Shire. It is on the Cassowary Coast between the World Heritage Rainforest and Barrier Reef areas and is about 1650 km north of Brisbane and about 85 km south of Cairns. Innisfail is one of the wettest cities in Australia and situated in a cyclone area. Cyclones have had a major impact on the architecture of the town over the last 100 years. The settlers who moved into this region from 1889 were exceptionally diverse. By 1996, residents of the local district spoke 48 different languages. The town has a highly religious background and large Mediterranean population which is reflected by the Catholic Church which stands imposingly on the brow of the main street. A sugar city for over a century, today Innisfail has become a busy town which produces a large proportion of the state's sugar, bananas and tropical fruits.
