| Abstract |
From her election as Brisbane's lord mayor in 1985 to her defeat in 1991, Sallyanne Atkinson became something of a media superstar. After her much publicised efforts to
obtain the 1992 Olympics for Brisbane, she was increasingly portrayed as a potential federal Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister of Australia. However, image-conscious journalists
almost always failed to scrutinise her actual performance in governing Brisbane. Hence some laudatory articles were still appearing in 1990 when vocal critics were protesting her overseas
trips, costly traffic engineering projects, mayoral salary package and proposed new 'super-dump'. Nevertheless, her defeat, following her lacklustre 1991 election campaign, was generally
viewed as a major electoral upset.
