Abstract Ten metropolitan or national newspapers - nine Australian and one New Zealand - were analysed over either seven or six years for their content of science stories according to strict criteria aimed at filtering out 'non-core' science, such as computer technology, as well as what was considered non-science and pseudo-science. The study sought to establish the proportions of 'real' science to total editorial content in these newspapers. Results were compared with similar content in US, UK, European and South-East Asian dailies.
