Abstract/Summary This paper critically examines and explains the increasingly influential idea of "global governance". After outlining the way the international order has evolved over the last fifty years or so and describing the new actors that are such a prominent part of contemporary governance structures, I explain how global governance has been understood theoretically. Finally I examine the implications that evolving patterns of governance may have for states.
