A new breed of doctor? Lessons learned and changes made to library services for the MBBS program at the University of Queensland

November 2000 saw the graduation of the first cohort from the new MBBS Program at The University of Queensland. The fully integrated problem-based curriculum has provided many challenges and opportunities for The University of Queensland Library such as servicing an extensive remote student population, information technology issues and customer demand. In October 2000 all four years of the MBBS Program completed a survey on related issues such as the library's collection, web-based resources, information skills and evidence-based medicine. This paper focuses on the results of the survey, and the future directions of the library to ensure that the new doctors graduating from this program gain the essential attributes of life-long learning, information management and evidence-based principles.

Assessment of sources of variance and patterns of overlap in microchiropteran wing morphology in southeast Queensland, Australia

In ecomorphological relationships, ecological similarities or overlap between species may occur with morphological similarity or overlap. Determination of morphological distinctness is thus important when relating morphology with ecology. This is the first of a series of papers investigating the ecomorphology of Microchiroptera in southeast Queensland, Australia, and in it I describe means and ranges of measurements and distinctness of wing morphology. In 21 species from this region, species means for aspect ratio (relative wing width) ranged from 4.98 to 8.25, while wing loading (mass by wing area) ranged from 4.32 to 15.9 N/m2. For these variables, each species' range (minimum–maximum) overlaps that of at least one other species, with greater overlap at lower values. Morphological overlap was frequent, owing to a consistently wide range of wing dimensions within species, with greater overlap at low aspect ratios and wing loadings where species were more closely packed. For all variables, the variance arising from the method of measurement (wing extend and trace) was less than intraspecific variance, but in many cases was similar to interspecific overlap. A proportion of the range and overlap in wing-morphology variables is attributable to measurement variance. The variance in aspect ratio was lower than in wing loading at species, genus, family, and region levels. Phylogenetic constraint on aspect ratio appears to be greater than on wing loading, particularly at the family level. At family and genus levels, aspect ratio varied less than wing loading. No overlap in aspect ratio occurred at family level. I group species into morphologically distinct units and provide predictions of the flight behaviour of these.

Bony at home and abroad: The Arthur Upfield phenomenon

Upfield published thirty-four novels, twenty-nine of them in a crime fiction series featuring the part-Aboriginal detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte. His books were widely read in Australia but his financial success came principally through the publication of his work in the United States and Europe, establishing a world-wide reputation through translations into at least fifteen languages. Upfield's following overseas, particularly in America, continued to grow after his death, reaching almost cult proportions and spawning websites, newsletters and new publications as recently as this year (2008). Upfield's mysteries have commonly been categorised as 'cultural tourism', depending for their appeal on an exotic setting and sensational events. This paper contests such a view and examines Upfield's publication, reception and reputation overseas - compared to his comparative neglect in Australia - including issues of cultural translation, the nature of his readership, his relationship with his American editor and publisher, his German translator and the legacy preserved by his fans.

Cancer risk after medical exposure to radioactive iodine in benign thyroid diseases: a meta-analysis

Radioiodine (131I) is widely used for diagnosis and treatment of benign thyroid diseases. Observational studies have not been conclusive about the carcinogenic potential of 131I and we therefore conducted a meta-analysis. We performed a literature search till September 2011 which included 131I as a diagnostic or treatment modality (131I for treatment of thyroid cancer was excluded). Data on 64 different organ or organ group subsets comprising of 22,029 exposed subjects in the therapeutic cohorts and 24,799 in the diagnostic cohorts in seven studies were included. Outcome was pooled as the relative risk (RR) using both standard and bias adjusted methods. Quality assessment was performed with a study specific instrument. No increase in overall (RR 1.06, 95 % CI 0.94 - 1.19), main organ group or combined organ group (four groups known to concentrate 131I; RR 1.11, 95 % CI 0.94-1.31) risks was demonstrable. Individual organs, demonstrated a higher risk for kidney (RR 1.70, 95 % CI 1.15 - 2.51) and thyroid (RR: 1.99, 95 % CI 1.22 - 3.26) cancers with a strong trend for stomach cancer (RR 1.11; 95% CI 0.92 - 1.33). A thyroid dose effect was seen for diagnostic doses. While there is no increase in the overall burden of cancer, an increase in risk to a few organs is seen that requires substantiation. The possible increase in thyroid cancer risk following diagnostic 131I use should no longer be of concern given that it has effectively been replaced by as the use of 99mTc-pertechnetate.

Cloud law and contract negotiation

The main characteristics of cloud computing services are explained and the clauses typically included in contracts between suppliers and customers of such services are discussed. Storing data on a cloud service can be more comfortable for an organization and cheaper than local storage, but it involves several risks. Recommendations are given on how to negotiate contracts. A list of questions to be asked of cloud service suppliers is provided so that a potential client can take an informed decision and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Creating the essential links for educating the evidence-based medical practitioner of the 21st century

A new postgraduate Medical (MBBS) program at the University of Queensland has been the catalyst for the development of a range of University of Queensland (UQ) Cybrary initiatives, in areas of information resources, services and support. Over the past seven years the UQ Cybrary has successfully integrated library services into the problem-based learning and the e-learning environment of the MBBS Program. Information and communications technology developments have been harnessed by the Cybrary to support the needs of the Program which are dispersed throughout the vast state of Queensland. In particular, there has been a focus on using information and communications technology (ICT) to provide efficient and equitable access for all those involved with UQ city and rural health education. The Cybrary has risen to the challenge of providing information services and resources to support evidence-based practice (EBP) and lifelong learning, ultimately contributing towards achieving an outstanding medical workforce for the 21st Century. This paper will outline how the UQ Cybrary has addressed these issues, particularly in the areas of integration of online materials in the e-learning environment, the development and delivery of tailored information literacy programs and the use of ICT to support access to information and services.

Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship Report

Fostering and encouraging professional involvement amongst our colleagues and those entering librarianship is of great importance to position the library profession in the future. Since 2005 great effort has been underway to champion the International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML) by the Convenors. Spreading the word about the Congress, hosted in Australia for the first time, has required participation at major library events held throughout the world and promulgation of ICML news as widely as possible. During this period Lisa Kruesi through the encouragement of her manager, Heather Todd, applied and received a MLA Cunningham Fellowship. The presentation is a case study, outlining the importance of seizing professional opportunities and the benefits of awards for librarians, organisations and clients. A copy of the report of the Cunningham Fellowship is provided.

Cybrary Support for Learning, Teaching and Research at The University of Queensland - the 1998 University of the Year

The Library has taken a leadership role in addressing the real needs of students in the 21st Century. It is working collaboratively with students and staff to meet their learning and teaching needs as new technological and service possibilities become available. The Library has integrated new web developments with traditional services to create Australia's first Cybrary - a 'virtual library' in a 'wired university'. The Cybrary is an indispensable, integrated approach to meet the information demands of lifelong learning and problem based teaching. It is a powerful support for flexible learning and an enhancement to flexible teaching. The University of Queensland Library has traditionally been an early adopter of technology. In the early 1970s online databases were searched for clients; then an electronic catalogue was introduced. When CD-ROM technology opened up the world of enduser access to electronic bibliographic databases the Library was among the first to provide its clients with these products. As a proactive electronic service provider, the Library has adopted and utilized Internet and Web technology as a vehicle to provide better service to its clients. As a result of its prompt and innovative adoption of leading edge technologies the Library has developed the Cybrary. The services offered through the Cybrary support the complex and varied learning journeys that both students and staff undertake in the current educational environment. Students and staff are able to control their own research and learning to a degree not known before. Last year the Library was recognised for its innovative Cybrary services when it jointly won the highly regarded Institutional Award for Services to Australian Students in the Australian Awards for University Teaching. The paper describes the Cybrary's components and the challenges faced in its implementation.

Digitisation of unique collections of architectural and historical images at the University of Queensland Library

The paper examines the University of Queensland Library’s involvement with digitization through the development of the initial digital projects. • Digilib: Architectural Image Database • Images of Early Brisbane: Selected Images from the Alcock Collection • Hume Collection These projects were developed in accordance with the Library’s digitization goals that include: • The desire to make collections accessible in the first instance to staff and students of the University of Queensland and ultimately to researchers throughout the world, and • The need to preserve rare, fragile and unique items The images from these collections are being added to PictureAustralia as part of the Library’s goal of contributing to Australian digital resources. There is discussion of how these early trials are informing our future plans for digitization.
