Creating the Essential Links for Educating the Evidence-Based Medical Practitioner of the 21st Century

A new postgraduate Medical (MBBS) program at the University of Queensland has been the catalyst for the development of a range of University of Queensland (UQ) Cybrary initiatives,
in areas of information resources, services and support. Over the past seven years the UQ Cybrary has successfully integrated library services into the problem-based learning and the e-learning
environment of the MBBS Program. Information and communications technology developments have been harnessed by the Cybrary to support the needs of the Program which are dispersed throughout the
vast state of Queensland. In particular, there has been a focus on using information and communications technology (ICT) to provide efficient and equitable access for all those involved with UQ
city and rural health education. The Cybrary has risen to the challenge of providing information services and resources to support evidence-based practice (EBP) and lifelong learning, ultimately
contributing towards achieving an outstanding medical workforce for the 21st Century. This paper will outline how the UQ Cybrary has addressed these issues, particularly in the areas of integration
of online materials in the e-learning environment, the development and delivery of tailored information literacy programs and the use of ICT to support access to information and
 services.

Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship Report

Fostering and encouraging professional involvement amongst our colleagues and those entering librarianship is of great importance to position the library profession in the future. Since 2005 great effort has been underway to champion the International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML) by the Convenors. Spreading the word about the Congress, hosted in Australia for the first time, has required participation at major library events held throughout the world and promulgation of ICML news as widely as possible. During this period Lisa Kruesi through the encouragement of her manager, Heather Todd, applied and received a MLA Cunningham Fellowship. The presentation is a case study, outlining the importance of seizing professional opportunities and the benefits of awards for librarians, organisations and clients. A copy of the report of the Cunningham Fellowship is provided.

Cybrary Support for Learning, Teaching and Research at The University of Queensland - the 1998 University of the Year

The Library has taken a leadership role in addressing the real needs of students in the 21st Century. It is working collaboratively with students and staff to meet their learning and teaching needs as new technological and service possibilities become available. The Library has integrated new web developments with traditional services to create Australia's first Cybrary - a 'virtual library' in a 'wired university'. The Cybrary is an indispensable, integrated approach to meet the information demands of lifelong learning and problem based teaching. It is a powerful support for flexible learning and an enhancement to flexible teaching. The University of Queensland Library has traditionally been an early adopter of technology. In the early 1970s online databases were searched for clients; then an electronic catalogue was introduced. When CD-ROM technology opened up the world of enduser access to electronic bibliographic databases the Library was among the first to provide its clients with these products. As a proactive electronic service provider, the Library has adopted and utilized Internet and Web technology as a vehicle to provide better service to its clients. As a result of its prompt and innovative adoption of leading edge technologies the Library has developed the Cybrary. The services offered through the Cybrary support the complex and varied learning journeys that both students and staff undertake in the current educational environment. Students and staff are able to control their own research and learning to a degree not known before. Last year the Library was recognised for its innovative Cybrary services when it jointly won the highly regarded Institutional Award for Services to Australian Students in the Australian Awards for University Teaching. The paper describes the Cybrary's components and the challenges faced in its implementation.

Digitisation of unique collections of architectural and historical images at the University of Queensland Library

The paper examines the University of Queensland Library’s involvement with digitization through the development of the initial digital projects. • Digilib: Architectural Image Database • Images of Early Brisbane: Selected Images from the Alcock Collection • Hume Collection These projects were developed in accordance with the Library’s digitization goals that include: • The desire to make collections accessible in the first instance to staff and students of the University of Queensland and ultimately to researchers throughout the world, and • The need to preserve rare, fragile and unique items The images from these collections are being added to PictureAustralia as part of the Library’s goal of contributing to Australian digital resources. There is discussion of how these early trials are informing our future plans for digitization.

Eprint Archives - Reaching Critical Mass?

Universities produce varying amounts of research each year. Yet finding much of that vast output can be problematical. Research findings are scattered across scores of different disciplines, in a range of different scholarly publications or collections of conference papers. Access to such material may be allowed to subscribers only. This limits the availability of research and thus limits its usefulness. If people cannot see results, they cannot build on them. This is one of the problems that e-print archives developed to solve. The aim of an open archive is to make research freely available, in full text, for anyone to use. Some higher education institutions, both abroad and now here in Australia, are beginning to see the value of such archives as a way of showcasing their research in a single, central, searchable space.

Historic Bridge Photographs: The Lahey Collection

Romeo Watkins Lahey (1887-1968) was a distinguished Queensland engineer. He graduated in engineering from the University of Sydney in 1914 and served in World War I from 1915 to 1918
with The Royal Australian Engineers. Following the war, he accepted an offer to remain for a period in England and studied town planning at the University of London. He visited Europe and collected
a remarkable set of historic bridge photographs. In the course of this visit, he met Paul Sejourne, a distinguished French bridge engineer, the designer of at Ieast one of the bridges (at
Fontpedrouse, pages 25-27) included in this set. When Lahey died, his wife Sybil and daughter Ann took steps to give this remarkable set of 58 historic bridge photographs to The University of
Queensland. More recently, Lahey's daughters Ann Neale and Alison Drake have given a set of lantern plates collected by their father, many of which also have photographs of bridges. This volume is
divided into three parts: (a) a biography of Romeo Watkins Lahey, written by his daughter, Ann Neale; (b) copies of the original set of 58 bridge photographs, and (c) copies taken from 32 lantern
plates. To these have been added captions. Many of the original photographs carried titles; where these are available they have been printed in italics. Further work has been done to identify
bridges and where possible the captions include the completion date, major dimensions, locations, and references to published works. Plates 8.1-10 are copies of drawings used as Figures in a book.
These drawings have not been copied and the source has not been identified. Two lists of photographs and plates are included - the first in the order of the original collections and a second with
bridges listed in the order of material, structural form and date. The collection is of remarkable value to any bridge historian, and is recommended for study by students.

Infoseek, InfoFind! Information Literacy & Integrated Service Delivery for Researchers & Postgraduates

Library programs which are indispensable, integrated tools for lifelong learning, problem based teaching, and cutting edge research must remain in touch with changing customer needs. The University of Queensland Library's Information Skills for Researchers & Postgraduates program is being revised and updated to reflect changing priorities and learning groups. Focus groups, which highlighted concerns about the way the program had been publicised, its instructional design and its modes of delivery, are being responded to. This paper outlines methods of addressing these concerns and the implications for an academic library involved in the cycle of design and redesign of services and Information Literacy Programs for researchers and postgraduates.

Inservice Education for Cybrary Skills in the Tertiary Environment: Paper presented at the International conference of Library and information science educators in the Asia Pacific Region, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, June 10-12, 2001.

The growth of information technology has changed the nature of resources collected by libraries, the ways in which library materials are organised and accessed, and the information services provided by libraries. Teaching methods, learning styles and research methods have also changed. This means that the knowledge and skills required by librarians and information professionals are changing. Programs are offered by the University of Queensland Library to provide the practising librarian and library manager with the knowledge and skills to transform libraries and their services. Cybrary Skills in the Tertiary Environment is the generic name which the University of Queensland Library gives to these training programmes. Librarians from several countries have worked and studied at the UQ Library, in groups or in individual placements, for varying periods of time. This paper explains the program and its rationale, and looks at critical success factors.

Keeping a finger on the organisational pulse: surveying staff perceptions in times of change

While surveying clients has become a standard part of research libraries’ qualitative assessment programmes, regularly surveying a library’s own staff is less common. Client surveys at the University of Queensland Library consistently reveal that the Library staff are regarded as the Library’s greatest asset. It is important to work at ensuring that these two hundred and fifty assets feel positive and motivated in their work, particularly in current times of rapid change in their workplace and sometimes the actual nature of their work. This paper examines the Library’s experience of surveying the staff five times over eight years. It examines the survey instrument itself, and the methods of analyses employed to interpret the data.
