Early life course predictors of young adults' gambling

This study examined the association between a wide range of factors and young adults' gambling. Data were from the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy. The study is based on 3691 individuals for whom data were available on self-report gambling and gambling expenditure at the 21-year follow-up. Independent variables were measured at the baseline and 14-year follow-up. Adolescents who smoked cigarettes, exhibited externalizing problems, performed poorly at high school or experienced childhood sexual abuse were more likely to gamble or spend more money on gambling at 21 years. While it is uncertain whether early interventions for those individuals who start to use substances at an early age or face difficulties due to family circumstances will impact on rates of gambling, research should examine whether intervention programmes that target modifiable factors such as adolescent school performance and externalizing behaviour reduce later gambling.

Educational attainment across generations: the role of immigration background

This paper analyses educational attainment among immigrant and native-born youth in Australia. We find that young Australians from non-English-speaking-background (NESB) immigrant families have an educational advantage over their English-speaking-background (ESB) immigrant and Australian-born peers. The educational advantages associated with immigrant parents’ higher educational attainment are counterbalanced by the disadvantages associated with immigrant families’ greater socioeconomic disadvantage, making endowment effects overall relatively unimportant in explaining the gap. Instead, most of the educational gap associated with immigration background stems from differences in the educational attainment of immigrant and native-born youths with the same characteristics. While immigrant parents do not have an enhanced ability to transmit their own educational advantage to their children, they are more effective in shielding their children from some of the negative educational consequences of socioeconomic disadvantage. Finally, immigrant youths’ residential patterns convey substantial educational advantages to them.

Effect of mobile phone-based psychotherapy in suicide prevention: A randomized controlled trial in Sri Lanka

We conducted a randomized controlled trial to test whether a Brief Mobile Treatment (BMT) intervention could improve outcomes relative to usual care among suicide attempters. The intervention included training in problem solving therapy, meditation, a brief intervention to increase social support as well as advice on alcohol and other drugs, and mobile phone follow-up. The effect of the intervention was measured in terms of a reduction in suicidal ideation, depression and self-harm at Baseline, six and 12 months. A wait-list control group received usual care. A total of 68 participants was recruited from a Sri Lankan hospital following a suicide attempt. Participants who received the intervention were found to achieve significant improvements in reducing suicidal ideation and depression than those receiving usual care. The BMT group also experienced a significant improvement of social support when compared to the control group. However, the BMT group did not demonstrate a significant effect in reducing actual self-harm and most substance use, and differential effects on alcohol use were restricted to men. Although the present study was limited in revealing which component of the intervention was more effective in preventing suicide, it showed its efficacy in reducing suicide as a whole.

Effect of obesity on toxicity in women treated with adjuvant chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer: a systematic review

The purpose of this study is to provide more definite evidence regarding the role of dose modification of chemotherapy in obese women with breast cancer by systematically reviewing current literature regarding chemotherapy-induced toxicity rates in obese and non-obese women with early-stage breast cancer. A systematic search of Pubmed and EMBASE was conducted to identify original studies investigating chemotherapy-induced toxicity in obese women receiving adjuvant chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Ten studies were identified. We noted low rates of adjustment for confounders such as prophylactic hematopoietic growth factor use and empirical dose reductions. Seven studies found reduced toxicity in obese compared to non-obese women. Of four studies, where dose capping was precluded or statistically adjusted for, three found reduced toxicity in obese women. These outcomes include less febrile neutropenia (body mass index (BMI) >23.6; odds ratio (OR) 4.4; 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.65-12.01), fewer hospital admissions (BMI >35; OR 0.61, 95 % CI 0.38-0.97), and fewer neutropenic events (BMI >25; OR 0.49; 95 % CI 0.37-0.66). Only a single study reported higher rates of toxicity in obese women, but this study had significant methodological issues. As a conclusion, we observed that obese patients tolerate chemotherapy better than lean patients. However, this may be confounded by poorly specified dose capping practices and the use of hematopoietic growth factors. Further research should focus on improved documentation of body size, of dose, and of use of growth factors, and analysis of how these affect recurrence rates, toxicity, and survival.

Effects of muscular strength on cardiovascular risk factors and prognosis

Physical fitness is one of the strongest predictors of individual future health status. Together with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), muscular strength has been increasingly recognized in the pathogenesis and prevention of chronic disease. We review the most recent literature on the effect of muscular strength in the development of cardiovascular disease, with special interest in elucidating its specific benefits beyond those from CRF and body composition. Muscular strength has shown an independent protective effect on all-cause and cancer mortality in healthy middle-aged men, as well as in men with hypertension and patients with heart failure. It has also been inversely associated with age-related weight and adiposity gains, risk of hypertension, and prevalence and incidence of the metabolic syndrome. In children and adolescents, higher levels of muscular fitness have been inversely associated with insulin resistance, clustered cardiometabolic risk, and inflammatory proteins. Generally, the influence of muscular fitness was weakened but remained protective after considering CRF. Also, interestingly, higher levels of muscular fitness seems to some extent counteract the adverse cardiovascular profile of overweight and obese individuals. As many of the investigations have been conducted with non-Hispanic white men, it is important to examine how race/ethnicity and gender may affect these relationships. To conclude, most important effects of resistance training are also summarized, to better understand how higher levels of muscular fitness may result in a better cardiovascular prognosis and survival.

Efficiency of the Malaysian hotel industry: a distance function approach

This article introduces the distance function approach with both the DEA bootstrap and SF methods to examine the efficiency of the hotel industry in Malaysia. The DEA results reveal that, on average, the Malaysian hotels under investigation are 66% efficient compared with the best practices in the industry. It is also shown that large hotels are relatively more efficient than small hotels. After taking into account the differences in size and operational practices (proxies by the availability of a food and beverage operation), the average efficiency of Malaysian hotels rose to 83%. It seems also that the inclusion of a food and beverage operation is a source of inefficiency, especially for small hotels.

Emerging roles of cadmium and heme oxygenase in type-2 diabetes and cancer susceptibility

Many decades after an outbreak of severe cadmium poisoning, known as Itai-itai disease, cadmium continues to pose a significant threat to human health worldwide. This review provides an update on the effects of this environmental toxicant cadmium, observed in numerous populations despite modest exposure levels. In addition, it describes the current knowledge on the link between heme catabolism and glycolysis. It examines novel functions of heme oxygenase-2 (HO-2) that protect against type 2-diabetes and obesity, which have emerged from diabetic/obese phenotypes of the HO-2 knockout mouse model. Increased cancer susceptibility in type-2 diabetes has been noted in several large cohorts. This is a cause for concern, given the high prevalence of type-2 diabetes worldwide. A lifetime exposure to cadmium is associated with pre-diabetes, diabetes, and overall cancer mortality with sex-related differences in specific types of cancer. Liver and kidney are target organs for the toxic effects of cadmium. These two organs are central to the maintenance of blood glucose levels. Further, inhibition of gluconeogenesis is a known effect of heme, while cadmium has the propensity to alter heme catabolism. This raises the possibility that cadmium may mimic certain HO-2 deficiency conditions, resulting in diabetic symptoms. Intriguingly, evidence has emerged from a recent study to suggest the potential interaction and co-regulation of HO-2 with the key regulator of glycolysis: 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 4 (PFKFB4). HO-2 could thus be critical to a metabolic switch to cancer-prone cells because the enzyme PFKFB and glycolysis are metabolic requirements for cell proliferation and resistance to apoptosis.
