Internationalizaton as de-Westernization of the curriculum: the case of journalism at an Australian university

Internationalization of the curriculum points to the interdependent and interconnected (globalized) world in which higher education operates. However, while international awareness is crucial to the study of journalism, in practice this often means an Anglo-American curriculum based around Western principles of journalism education and training that are deeply rooted in Western values and traditions. This tendency to privilege Western thought, practice, and values obscures from view other journalism practices and renders Western models of journalism desirable, replicable, and transplantable to any part of the world. This article discusses the engagement of a small group of staff in the process of thinking through the meaning of internationalization of the curriculum in their particular disciplinary and institutional context. The staff are located in a school of journalism and communication at a large research intensive university in Australia. The article describes the thinking behind their decision to focus internationalization of the curriculum on “critical de-Westernization” and social imaginaries. This was a gestalt shift resulting from discussion of the way in which “taken for granted” disciplinary canons had hitherto been uncritically embedded into the curriculum. It is argued that treating internationalization of the journalism curriculum as critical de-Westernization has conceptual and practical benefits in a globalized world.

Pathways through the life course have undergone considerable change in recent years. Compared to previous generations, young adults today face a very different set of choices and constraints to their parents and grandparents. The typical life course trajectory of leaving school, dating, becoming engaged, marrying and having children has been turned upside down so that it is now almost as common to have children prior to marriage as afterwards, and certainly much more common to live together before marrying than to marry directly without a period of defacto cohabitation. In the mid-1970s in Australia, just 16 % of couples lived together before marrying. Now, more than three-quarters do. In the in Australia, approximately one in every 25 children was born outside marriage. Now, the corresponding figure is one in three. About 32 % of Australian marriages end in divorce (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2005), and the traditional nuclear family, with a full-time male earner and a full-time female housewife and mother is now less common in Australia than a household in which both partners work for pay (De Vaus 2004).

Introduction: the fate of the concept

The first half of this volume is made up of essays that engage with various theoretical, historical, and political aspects of the Cahiers pour l'Analyse and its legacy in European thought; the second contains interviews with participants in the endeavour as it unfolded in the 1960s at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. This difference of genre results in a striking discrepancy. Taken together, the essays make a case for why such a demanding set of texts deserves some measure of our attention today. By contrast, the interviews present the journal as stemming from a conjuncture that was unique in its political and institutional conditions and that is consequently unrepeatable in its specifics. The sentiments range from the dismissive to the enthusiastic, sometimes within the same interview, but, with the notable exception of Alain Badiou, the editors of the Cahiers generally emphasize the degree to which their effort belongs to the past. As a result, the implicit insistence on the journal's contemporary resonance that informs the book's first part is offset in the second by a focus on its essentially historical quality.
Investigating the manifestation of decision-making approaches in nonprofits: implications for governance

Nonprofit organisations face an increasingly complex environment. As a response, they explore and adopt diverse management perspectives. This paper begins with the premise that these perspectives can be classified into three distinct schools of thought, each of which represents a particular ideology towards managing nonprofit organisations. Furthermore, it suggests that these ideologies resonate with the decision-making approaches prominent in the general management literature. As such, the aim of the paper is to examine how each of these decision-making approaches manifest within nonprofits and explore their consequences for practice - focussing in particular on governance. The findings indicate that nonprofit practices are indeed guided by the differing decision-making approaches that can clearly be identified. Furthermore, we find that they have intended and unintended consequences that can either benefit the organisation or prove detrimental. Our key contribution therefore lies in offering an integrative framework that explains the contrasting nature of nonprofit decision-making and governance processes along with early empirical evidence of the varying approaches. Keeping in mind the volatility within the nonprofit landscape, we raise the need for future research that explores decision-making approaches within nonprofits.

Investigations for parameter improvement of manganese oxide based aqueous supercapacitor

Manufacturing issues of electrical energy storage devices are very complex as it requires consideration of electrical, mechanical and economic aspects. Supercapacitor is a new energy storage device. It is operated along with batteries or fuel cells to shave off the pulse power demand. The energy density of supercapacitors depends on many parameters such as surface properties and electrical properties of the electrode material along with the ionic properties of the electrolyte. Statistical method is implemented to get the material based model of the symmetrical aqueous supercapacitor using innovative sandwich type of supercapacitor construction, to address the issues related to material and manufacturing. Temperature and lifecycle testing is carried out to prove its commercial merit for a hybrid pack of supercapacitor - battery.

Is artificial dermis an effective tool in the treatment of tendon-exposed wounds?

As flap surgery remains the main technique to close wounds with tendon exposure, the application of artificial dermis in these complex soft tissue wounds is seldom reported. The purpose of this article is to review our experiences in the treatment of tendon-exposed wounds with artificial dermis. This retrospective study included 23 patients with 33 tendon-exposed wounds treated with artificial dermis from 2004 to 2009. Data including patient demographics, wound type, duration from artificial dermis implantation to split thickness skin grafting, surgical complications, and clinical outcome were obtained by chart review. Successful treatment was defined as the formation of golden-yellow neodermis followed by successful split thickness skin grafting. Among the 33 tendon-exposed wounds, 11 were secondary to chronic ulcers, 16 to acute wounds, and 6 to surgical wounds after hypertrophic scar excision. The mean patient age was 49 years. The overall success rate with the artificial dermis technique was 82%, including 63% in the chronic ulcer group, 88% in the acute wounds, and 100% in the surgical wounds. In the success group, 11% of the wounds required repeated artificial dermis implantations. Within the failure group, two wounds were closed by below knee amputation, two by local flap surgery, and two were allowed spontaneous healing as a result of graft failure. We have demonstrated an overall success rate of 82% for tendon-exposed wound closure by using artificial dermis. The outcome was better in surgical and acute wounds than in chronic wounds.

Is it too late to stabilise the global climate?

Assessment of the feasibility of stabilising the global climate requires consideration of trajectories for emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. This study presents a simple and robust analysis of feasible emissions trajectories. Consideration of feasible trajectories suggests that if the current pace of mitigation efforts is sustained, the likely outcome will be stabilisation at concentrations close to 500 parts per million. Such an outcome will imply a higher than 50 per cent probability of substantial damage from climate change and an enhanced risk of a catastrophic outcome.

Isotherm and kinetics of As(III) uptake from aqueous solution by Cinnamomum zeylanicum

Cinnamon-bark (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) powder (CP) was investigated to evaluate the As(III) biosorption capability from aqueous solution. Biosorption behavior of As(III) was studied by batch column experiments. The adsorption phenomenon were analyzed with various experimental variables such as solution pH, sorbent amount, agitation speed, initial As(III) concentration and temperature. Maximum sorption was occurred at pH 5.0 while the equilibrium was established in 8 h. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were employed for fitting the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacity of CP was observed to be 36.311 μg g-1. The biosorption kinetics was speculated to follow pseudo-first-order kinetic model (R2 =0.998) with the sorption rate of 15.340×10-3 min-1 for the initial As(III) concentration of 500 μg L-1. The biosorbent material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The activation energy (Ea) and heat of biosorption (H) were calculated to be 17.780 and 30.724 kJ mol-1 respectively. Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated which revealed the spontaneous nature of biosorption on CP accompanied with the physical activated process. The break through characteristics of C. zeylanicum packed column was also investigated by small scale column tests (SSCT).

Inexpensive, simple and quick detection of pathogen antigens in human samples is a key global health objective. Limiting factors include the cost and complexity of diagnostic tests that utilize antibody probes. Herein, we present a method for label-free electrochemical detection of a protein from the enteric pathogen Entamoeba histolytica using cell-free yeast-embedded antibodylike fragments (yeast-scFv) as novel affinity reagents.

A pulsed laser engineering approach is developed to prepare novel functional graphene paper with graphitic nanospheres homogeneously decorated on the surface and the superior performance of engineered paper is revealed in matrix-free mass spectrometry (MS) detection and imaging. We demonstrate that the stability of graphene paper under intense irradiation can be dramatically increased through a designed laser engineering process by forming densely packed graphitic nanospheres on the paper surface. Moreover, the surface hydrophobicity is enhanced and electric conductivity is improved. The engineered graphene paper can image the invisible micro-patterns of trace amount molecules and increases the detection limit towards diverse molecules by over two orders of magnitude compared to the pristine graphene paper and commercial products in MS analysis.

Law and legal institutions of Asia: Traditions, adaptations and innovations

The study of Asia and its plural legal systems is of increasing significance, both within and outside Asia. Lawyers, whether in Australia, America or Europe, or working within an Asian jurisdiction, require a sound knowledge of how the law operates across this fast-growing and diverse region. Law and Legal Institutions of Asia is the first book to offer a comprehensive assessment of eleven key jurisdictions in Asia – China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore and the Philippines. Written by academics and practitioners with particular expertise in their state or territory, each chapter uses a breakthrough approach, facilitating cross-jurisdictional comparisons and giving essential insights into how law functions in different ways across the region and in each of the individual jurisdictions.
Learning the communication lessons of the Port-au-Prince earthquake relief effort

This article examines communication management issues of emergency aid following natural disasters. Ten aid workers involved in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake relief were interviewed and surveyed while they were still "in the field" to determine their understanding of the role of communication in the relief effort. The analysis was framed using the three-stage process (pre-disaster, response, post-disaster). Analysis of their responses showed that there are still chronic problems in each of the stages. The importance of enhancing communication elements in the pre-disaster phase was a strong finding. In the response stage, the differential role of various media, including old technologies in poor regions, emerged as an issue. Organizational factors such as high staff turnover were also seen as nega· lively affecting communication efficacy. An important finding about the post-disaster stage is the importance of debriefing.

Lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system in mice disrupt idiothetic navigation

Loss of integrity of the basal forebrain cholinergic neurons is a consistent feature of Alzheimer's disease, and measurement of basal forebrain degeneration by magnetic resonance imaging is emerging as a sensitive diagnostic marker for prodromal disease. It is also known that Alzheimer's disease patients perform poorly on both real space and computerized cued (allothetic) or uncued (idiothetic) recall navigation tasks. Although the hippocampus is required for allothetic navigation, lesions of this region only mildly affect idiothetic navigation. Here we tested the hypothesis that the cholinergic medial septo-hippocampal circuit is important for idiothetic navigation. Basal forebrain cholinergic neurons were selectively lesioned in mice using the toxin saporin conjugated to a basal forebrain cholinergic neuronal marker, the p75 neurotrophin receptor. Control animals were able to learn and remember spatial information when tested on a modified version of the passive place avoidance test where all extramaze cues were removed, and animals had to rely on idiothetic signals. However, the exploratory behaviour of mice with cholinergic basal forebrain lesions was highly disorganized during this test. By contrast, the lesioned animals performed no differently from controls in tasks involving contextual fear conditioning and spatial working memory (Y maze), and displayed no deficits in potentially confounding behaviours such as motor performance, anxiety, or disturbed sleep/wake cycles. These data suggest that the basal forebrain cholinergic system plays a specific role in idiothetic navigation, a modality that is impaired early in Alzheimer's disease.

Liberal constitutionalism and the socialist state in an era of globalisation: an inquiry into Vietnam's constitutional discourse and power structures

The article explores the influences of liberal constitutionalism over the socialist state in an era of globalisation and its impacts on the power structures. Embarking on market-based reforms, the socialist state is increasingly facing with pressures for changes in the Constitution to narrow gaps between real practices and written legal rules as well as to deal with problems in existing governance structure and demands for democratic rights from the public. In that context, political liberalism is making inroads into emerging constitutional discourse which is traditionally dominated by socialist theory. The paper examines the impacts of liberal constitutionalism on Vietnam’s constitutional discourse and power structures and its limits in transforming statist socialism. It is argued that while Vietnam’s constitutional discourse is absorbing many elements of liberal constitutionalism, syncretism controlled by the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) limits changes in the foundation of power structures and state-society relations.
