An Examination of the Joint Role of Control and Proactive Personality in Determining Responses to a Work Simulation

In today’s job market, proactive individuals are in high demand because of their active approach to the work they face. Yet, little is understood about how proactive people react to demanding situations in the workplace and what leads them to experience work-related stress. Taking a job design and person-environment fit approach, this thesis aimed to investigate the effects of increasing or decreasing control on affective task reactions (i.e. tension-anxiety, effort, and satisfaction), and to examine how these differed between individuals with low and high levels of proactive personality. A sample of first year psychology students (N=154) each completed two trials of an email inbox activity with either an increase, decrease, or no change in control. As predicted, results found that for those high in proactive personality, an increase in control was associated with more effort and satisfaction towards the task. Increasing control did not affect how low proactive individuals responded to the task. Contrary to hypotheses, decreasing control did not influence affective task reactions for neither low nor high proactive individuals. Possible explanations for the lack of change in affective responses following a decrease in control are provided. The results are discussed with possible future directions and the practical implications of the findings.

An examination of the supannuation fund market reaction to the 'Choice of Fund' policy

Since the enactment of the Superannuation Choice legislation in July 2005, employees are now able to choose the fund into which their superannuation contributions will be invested. The stated aim of the Choice legislative change is to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the superannuation industry. In this study, efficiency is measured by assessing the fund industry reaction via an examination of the flow-performance relation. Competitiveness is evaluated by assessing the persistence in performance of individual funds. Consistent with the hypotheses, the 'Choice of Fund' policy has a significant effect on increasing the efficiency of the superannuation industry, which is supported by a stronger flowperformance relation post-Choice. The study also finds that competition in the superannuation industry has increased, which is evidenced by a decrease in performance persistence in the top performing funds and an increase in performance persistence in the bottom performing funds.

An exploration of compulsive buying tendency in a sample of online consumers

The nature of compulsive buying behaviour has been thoroughly investigated in “bricks and mortar” retail stores, but has not yet been sufficiently examined in the online domain. A sample of 299 online consumers completed a survey examining online buying behaviour, compulsive buying tendency, motivations to buy online and recreational Internet use. The study aimed to clarify inconsistencies in the literature regarding differences in compulsive buying tendency on the basis of gender, age, income and buying preference. The study also examined a variety of online buying motivations in relation to compulsive buying tendency. Significant differences in compulsive buying tendency were found on the basis of gender, age and income. No significant difference in compulsive buying tendency was found in relation to buying preference. The motivation to buy online for immediate positive feelings was a significant predictor of compulsive buying tendency, providing support for theories of compulsive buying that conceptualise this behaviour as a way to escape negative affect and modify subjective mood. An additional investigation into the relationship between Internet addiction and compulsive buying tendency indicated that compulsive buying tendency was significantly associated with excessive Internet use. Limitations and practical implications of the study are discussed.

An investigation into disfluency effects: Depth of learning and affective outcomes

Fluency is the concept of how easily information is processed. How fluent stimuli are can effect many real world outcomes, including increased ratings of truth, perceptions of the intelligence of an author, the potential enjoyment of stimuli, as well as increasing one’s feeling of familiarity. When stimuli are disfluent, or processed with cognitive difficulty, learning outcomes are superior to when stimuli is presented in a fluent manner. When participants were presented with learning material in Comic Sans or Bodini, they were able to recall more answers than participants who had the material presented in Arial (Diemand-Yauman, Oppenheimer & Vaughn, 2011). Experiment 1 used the same learning paradigm as Diemand-Yauman et al. (2011) to test four new fonts, with the aim to correct for confounds in the original study. The results demonstrated that participants learned the information best when presented in Corbel or Haettenschweiler, whereas they did not learn the information as well when presented in the Corbel Blur and RaNDoM conditions. In Experiment 2, participants read three good and three average essays, which were followed by two affect measures, and measures of recognition, recall and transfer memory. Results revealed that participants liked reading essays that were presented in Corbel significantly more than when they were presented in Haettenschweiler or Random fonts. Essays presented in Corbel received higher ‘grades’ than essays presented in the two disfluent fonts. In regards to learning outcomes, participants answered more questions correctly for the essays presented in Corbel, compared to those in Haettenschweiler and Random conditions. Additionally, results revealed that performance on the recall learning measure were higher when the essays were ‘average’ compared to when they were ‘good.’ The results contradict the findings of Diemand- Yauman et al. (2011). This thesis therefore highlights the need for further validation to determine the true nature of the effect, and the conditions for optimising performance.

An investigation into ego-depletion, social norms, identification, and their interactive effect on how people deal with interpersonal conflict

Previous research has shown that ego-depletion (i.e., temporarily lowered self-control) leads to an increase in aggressive responses to provocation. The present study aimed to investigate how ego-depletion may interact with social norms for dealing with conflict, and group identification, to affect how people choose to respond to interpersonal conflict. A sample of 132 university students participated in the study which utilised a 2 by 3 between groups design. Half of the participants completed a task to induce a state of ego-depletion, whilst the remaining participants completed a control task. Participants were then assigned to one of three norm conditions, in which they were told that Australians typically use an accommodating style of conflict management, a confrontational style of conflict management, or a control condition, in which they were not given a conflict management norm. Participants‟ levels of identification with Australia were then measured. Following this, participants read a series of conflict scenario vignettes in which they had to report how likely they would be to feel angry or intimidated, and how likely they would be to respond to the conflict with aggression or avoidance. For both aggressive and avoidant behaviour responses, significant ego-depletion times norm interactions were found. The results indicate that being in a state of ego-depletion does not necessarily make you more aggressive, but more likely to act in a way that is in keeping with the social norm. Mixed results in regards to the role of identification with Australia were found. Interpretations and implications are discussed.

An investigation in to the cause of recalibration after adaptation to auditory stimuli

Do humans have an accurate sense of timing? For humans to determine if they caused a sensory event, an amount of accuracy is needed. For example, if you hear the sound of a stick breaking, was it due to your footfall or due to another person or animal? We can make this distinction in relation to our step and when the stick was heard to break. Our sense of timing relationships needs to be malleable as there is a delay between the physical timing of an event and when the sensory signals from that event reach the brain. A demonstration of such malleability involves having people repeatedly press a button causing a beep. If a delay is inserted between the button presses and the beeps, and is later taken away, the beeps can appear to precede the button press that caused them. There is some ambiguity regarding the events which are involved in this apparent recalibration. In this study I introduce a ballistic reach between the initiation of an action leading to a button press and the button press itself. By varying the length of the ballistic reach it is possible to discern if the critical events for causality recalibration involves the decision to initiate the action or the motor planning required to execute the action. The results suggest that the critical relationship is between the tactile signals concerning actual button presses and subsequent auditory processing. The initiation of action and the motor planning are not significant factors.
