The face interference effect: A new perspective on the automaticity of holistic face processing

Prior research suggests that people process upright faces holistically as an independent image, but face inversion impairs this ability, altering face processing to a featural level. Featural face processing is slower as the features must be independently integrated to form the image of the face. The aim of the current project was to investigate whether evidence exists to suggest that the holistic account of face processing occurs as an automatic function. In two experiments participants were asked to judge only the mouthline direction of upright and inverted schematic faces. This process was designed to induce featural processing to occur for both upright and inverted faces. Therefore if judgements of mouthline direction are impaired for inverted faces, this would suggest that holistic processing of upright faces was automatic. In line with this rationale and drawing on previous findings related to the holistic account, the primary hypothesis was that participants would be unable to extract information about individual features from an upright normally arranged schematic face. Judgment performance would be impaired in inverted faces relative to upright faces. Response-times for judging mouthline direction were recorded for Experiment 1 and the novel approach of measuring dwell-times via infra-red eye tracking was added for Experiment 2. Dwell-times were measured to gauge how long people looked at face-like schematic stimuli whilst making judgements. Results were compared with control measurements recorded for scrambled nonface schematic stimuli containing the same mouthline directions. Findings support the primary hypothesis, suggesting that automatic feature integration is occurring for normally configured upright faces. These findings add support for the holistic face processing theory and contribute the important idea that holistic processing is automatic.

The firm-specific and time-varying cost of equity implied by Merton's distance to default measure

Motivated by the problems inherent in estimating the cost of equity using traditional methods such as the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), I provide an entirely new method of formulating the firm-specific expected return on equity. Using a derivation of the Merton (1974) distance to default model and the information inherent in Standard & Poor’s credit ratings, I construct a forward-looking model that is grounded in theory and requires no assumption about the unobservable market portfolio. I find substantial support for the power of my expected return measures using both quartile comparisons and firm-specific Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions. Crucially, my model performs well over the entire sample period, and exhibits clear risk-return relationships over a subsequent time period spanning at least five years from the cost of equity formation date. In contrast, I find that alternative measures that have been found to explain returns, including size, beta and the book-to-market ratio, often exhibit spurious return relationships over my 1985-2008 sample period. Given the poor observed performance of these commonly employed risk factors, my results have important ramifications for practitioners looking to estimate the cost of equity for capital budgeting purposes.

The full setting: Analysts' predictive ability - the truth is in the continual coverage

The literature that surrounds the predictive ability of equity analysts has, to date, presented conflicting results. The censoring of analysts’ true expectations, through their documented selective coverage of firms, has led to suggestions that the empirical results surrounding analysts’ predictive ability are systematically biased. This study circumvents the inherent bias evident in published forecasts and opinions by utilising the true expectations that analysts’ selective coverage necessarily reveals. These underlying expectations are captured by obtaining residual analyst continual coverage from a model of analyst following. While prior empirical research has utilised this methodology to explore analysts’ predictive ability, it has done so in limited settings. This study extends the predictive ability literature by providing evidence in an unrestricted setting, where analyst coverage is ongoing and continual. At the same time, whether the selective coverage of firms by analysts is a continual process or restricted to situations where explicit coverage decisions are made is evaluated. The empirical results suggest that the returns in the three subsequent years following a measure of residual analyst coverage are significantly better for firms with high residual coverage than firms with low residual coverage. That is, residual analyst continual coverage is positively related with subsequent firm performance. This evidence indicates that analysts possess predictive ability and selectively provide coverage for firms and update their coverage frequently in line with their changing expectations.

The genetic association between dopamine and cholinergic candidate genes and selective spatial attention

In order to allow for effective cognitive processing, selective spatial attention selectively filters and processes stimuli according to their spatial locations and relevance to current behavioural goals. Studies from neuropsychiatric disorders such as ADHD, animal models and pharmacological trials have all provided clues to the underlying neurochemistry of attention. These pieces of evidence converge to suggest the involvement of dopamine and cholinergic neurotransmitters in the modulation of attention. Adhering to a cognitive genetics framework, the current study examines how individual differences in genes encoding the dopamine and cholinergic neurotransmitter systems influence selective spatial attention. Specifically, this study explores how individual differences in spatial attentional performance based on a common exogenous cueing and a novel visual search task varies as a function of DNA variations of catecholamine and cholinergic genes. In a balanced randomized design, 368 healthy adult participants were recruited from the University of Queensland, to perform a battery of attentional tasks aimed at assessing discrete aspects of selective spatial attention. Results suggested the involvement of DAT1 in asymmetries of attention and provided preliminary evidence for the association of CHRM2 T allele to increased impairment of selective spatial attention particularly in situations of increased perceptual load.

The harmful consequences of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation and task performance: Investigating the roles of situational task control and trait self-control

This thesis investigated one of the most extensively used interventions by organisations to produce intrinsic motivation and better task performance among employees. This strategy involves the provision of performance-contingent financial incentives in various forms, such as bonuses and paid holidays. Deci and Ryan's (1985) self-determination theory posits that extrinsic rewards undermine intrinsic motivation and task performance, but that the presence of high task control also may act to diminish this undermining of extrinsic rewards on these outcomes, a proposition that has received some empirical support in the literature. In light of these results, the present study proposed that Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone‟s (2004) notion of trait self-control may moderate the interrelationship between extrinsic rewards and task control on intrinsic motivation and task performance. It was hypothesised that, for those low in trait self-control, the undermining effect of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation and task performance would be evident in the low task control condition, but would be diminished in the high task control condition. It also was hypothesised that for those high in trait self-control, the undermining effect of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation and task performance would be diminished in both the low and high task control conditions. These hypotheses were examined in a 2 (reward: extrinsic reward versus no reward) x 2 (task control: high versus low) x 2 (trait self-control: high versus low) experimental research design with a sample 124 participants who took part in a work task simulation. As predicted, results indicated that extrinsic rewards significantly undermined task performance only in the low task control condition and only for those low in trait self-control. However, contrary to the predictions, extrinsic rewards significantly enhanced intrinsic motivation regardless of situational task control and individual differences in trait self-control. Possible explanations for the unexpected findings are provided. Practical implications and future research directions also are discussed.

The impact of brand information on consumer loyalty: An information economics perspective

Drawing from information economics and brand signalling theories, this thesis integrates a new brand information construct into the Agustin and Singh (2005) loyalty model. It is anticipated to address the informational aspects in the marketplace and examine the impact of brand information on consumer loyalty. Two contributions of this thesis are noteworthy. Firstly, this thesis develops and conceptualises brand information as consisting of three dimensions: (1) knowledge of the correct price for the brand, (2) knowledge of the quality of the brand and (3) knowledge of the risk associated with the purchase of the brand. Secondly, this thesis contributes to the field by linking a consumer loyalty model with information economics concepts. Significant research results have been obtained in this thesis. Particularly, brand information is found to have a positive moderating effect on the trustloyalty relationship. This finding thus provides useful implications for both researchers and marketers. Theoretically, new insights are offered to the study of relationship marketing where brand information can be managed adequately to enhance the trust-loyalty relationship. In a managerial manner, communicating brand information can be used as a complementary strategy to any trust-building activities in order to boost consumer loyalty.

The impact of co-resident adult children on Australian parents: A pilot study

A variety of societal changes have led to the prolonged co-residency of adult children in the parental home. In North American and European studies, co-residence of adult children has been shown to affect parents’ quality of life, yet no research has examined the effect on Australian parents. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of co-residency on parental adjustment. Participants were a convenience sample of Australian parents (N = 113) with a focal child over the age of 18 living at home. Parents completed an online survey on parental adjustment, marital relationship quality, parental conflict, perceived adulthood status of their adult child, parenting styles and levels of parent-child conflict. Results indicated that parenting style, in particular those parents who were disapproving, had an impact on levels of parental depression, anxiety and stress. Perceived adulthood status of the adult child living at home and parenting style were also found to significantly predict levels of parent-child conflict. In addition, the relationship between perceived adulthood status of child and parent-child conflict was partially mediated by disapproving parenting, suggesting that if parents and young adults disagreed about adulthood status, parents disapproved as a consequence, leading to increased levels of parent-child conflict. These results may be utilised to suggest possible targets for interventions which may assist parents achieve to functional relationships during this extended period of adult child co-residency. Such interventions will be discussed in depth.
