The cognitive and emotional determinants of reactive aggression studied in healthy volunteers using a laboratory paradigm

Neurocognitive theories of reactive aggression have proposed that such behaviour is associated with both dysfunctional emotional processes, such as facial affect recognition, and impairments in executive functions such as response inhibition and cognitive flexibility. Presently, no single study has examined both cognitive and emotional predictors of reactive aggression. This was the aim of the current experiment. Eighty-six healthy volunteers were recruited. Aggression was measured using the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP). Emotional reactivity to provocation during the PSAP was measured using facial electromyography. Emotional processing was assessed using a visual search task measuring reaction time to locate emotional facial expressions. Self-reported emotional regulation strategies and experience of anger were also assessed. Two components of executive cognitive functioning, response inhibition and cognitive flexibility, were measured using the stop signal reaction paradigm and a set-shifting task. Self-reported impulsiveness was also assessed. It was hypothesised that aggression would be predicted by poorer performance on measures cognitive functioning, greater physiological reactivity during provocation, impaired attention to emotional faces, higher levels of self-reported impulsiveness and anger, and lower self-reported positive emotional regulation strategies. One significant cognitive (set-shifting) and emotional (processing) correlate of aggression were observed. When entered into a regression analysis only accurate set-shifting ability was predictive of aggression in the model. Hypotheses were not supported for other variables. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The cognitive neuroscience of group membership

The aim of the present study was to uncover the neural basis of group membership, and investigate whether the brain represents the ‘in-group’ differentially to the ‘out-group’. It was hypothesised that a network of brain regions including the cortical midline structures (CMS) and the temporal gyrus, would show enhanced activation for social words versus non-social words. It was also hypothesised that of these regions dedicated to the ‘social brain’, there would be unique neural activity in the medial prefrontal cortex for words associated with the in-group. To test this, participants were asked to identify which groups they felt they belonged to, and which groups they felt they did not belong to. In addition to the pre-existing groups, newly created groups were formed (the red team and the blue team). In a second session, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was then used to identify the brain regions that the participants used to process in-group words, out-group words, red team words, blue team words, and living and non-living (non-social) words. The results supported the first two research hypotheses for the pre-existing groups, revealing a network of brain activity specific to social words compared to non-social words, and in-group words compared to out-group words. This pattern of brain activity was not replicated for the newly created groups, suggesting that group membership represents significant meaning and is not easily recreated within a laboratory.

The concept of ownership: Are there differences between adults with Asperger syndrome and typically developing adults in kinematic reach-to-grasp motion effects?

This study aimed to investigate whether ownership influenced motor programming, and if this effect was atypical for individuals with Asperger syndrome. If revealed, this may suggest that individuals with Asperger syndrome hold an atypical concept of ownership. Fifteen adults with Asperger syndrome (mean age of 28.8, SD = 7.18), and 15 typical adults (mean age of 25.00, SD = 8.02) were tested across two experiments. Experiment 1 investigated the effects of ownership during its attainment phase. Participants personalised a mug and then performed reach-to-grasp actions towards their own mug, a mug owned by the experimenter, and an unowned mug. Meanwhile, passive reflective markers were attached to their thumbnail, index fingernail, radius and ulna, and infra-red cameras tracked their movements. During the attainment phase of ownership, ownership seemed to influence motor programming similarly between the groups. Both groups were slower in movement, and had a trend to have a more variable reach towards their own mug compared to the unowned mug. The participants then took their mugs away and used them for two weeks to reach a stage of mature ownership. Participants then returned to the lab, and performed more reach-to-grasp trials. During the mature stage of ownership, the effect of ownership on motor programming differed between the groups when grasping the experimenter's mug. While the typical adults had a trend to open their grasp later in their reach compared to their own mug, the participants with Asperger syndrome opened their grasp earlier in their reach towards the experimenter's mug. This difference suggested individuals with Asperger syndrome may have an atypical concept of ownership, in the context of someone else's property, and warrants further investigation.

The concurrent task benefit in the attentional blink: The effect of stimulus similarity and concurrent task difficulty.

When two targets are presented in a rapid sequence, attending to the first target (T1) hinders detection of a second target (T2) between 200 ms to 500 ms after T1. This attentional deficit known as 'attentional blink' (AB) represents an attentional capacity limitation in information processing. The present experiments varied stimulus nature and task difficulty in the concurrent task in order to manipulate task-relevance and task difficulty respectively. Experiment 1 investigated the effects of task-irrelevant additional stimuli. Participants were randomly allocated to either 'task' or control conditions. In both conditions participants viewed the same concurrent stimuli presented with the RSVP stream, however participants in the task condition were asked to notice the extraneous stimuli while in the control condition, participants were asked to ignore the stimuli. The experiment was split into four blocks of trials consisting of two high difficulty and two low difficulty blocks. Experiment 2 consisted of the same conditions except participants were presented with task-relevant extraneous stimuli. It was hypothesized that AB attenuation would be found in Experiment 1, AB would be impaired in Experiment 2 and difficulty conditions would exacerbate this effect. While T2 accuracy results supported these hypotheses, T1 accuracy data raised several important questions regarding the validity of the results.

The Dehumanising Consequences of Ostracism – Perpetrator and Co-perpetrator Perceptions

Ostracism and dehumanisation are social phenomena that occur every day with serious consequences. Current research of both of these social phenomena has only focused on the victim, and has therefore left the view of the perpetrator largely overlooked. Consequently, the aim of this study is to address several gaps in the literature. First-year and paid participants were recruited to participate in behavioural and pen-and-paper measures examining the dehumanising effects of ostracism from a perpetrator‘s perspective. Perpetrators of ostracism were predicted to dehumanise themselves, and also feel that their victim dehumanised them as well. Additionally, co-perpetrators were expected to dehumanise each other, and that perceptions of lessened humanity would prompt aggressive behaviour toward one other. As hypothesised, perpetrators of ostracism dehumanised themselves and their co-perpetrators. However, aggressive behaviour toward co-perpetrators was not significantly produced. Therefore, this paper demonstrates that perceptions of humanness are affected by the dehumanising consequences of being a perpetrator of ostracism. Further research and the theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.
