An Electrophysiological Investigation of Early Evoked Responses to Visual Onsets During the Attentional Blink

Mechanisms of attention serve to prioritise stimuli that are currently relevant for ongoing behaviour and biological needs. Conscious perception is thus limited by the extent to which attention selects sensory input for further processing. When observers monitor a rapid sequence of visual stimuli at fixation, their ability to detect a second target stimulus is often impaired if it appears within 500ms of an earlier target event, a phenomenon termed the attentional blink (AB). The aim of the current study was to examine the neural correlates of this decrement in target detection during rapid serial visual presentation. Thirty-one participants monitored an RSVP stream at fixation while neural event-related potentials were measured using a 64-channel electroencephalographic system. The task involved twoalternative, forced-choice judgments on an initial target stimulus (T1) and a subsequent target (T2), with the latter occurring at one of three temporal lags (100, 200, and 700ms). On 50% of T2 displays a small, task-irrelevant grating was presented in the upper-right quadrant, the purpose of which was to elicit a visual response from the left primary visual cortex (the C1 component). Participants showed a reliable AB at the 200ms lag relative to the 100 and 700ms lags. This was mirrored by a significant change in the mean amplitude of the N200 component for the 200ms lag. In contrast, there was no lag-specific change in the early C1 component. These results suggest that the AB reflects a neural bottleneck in information processing that arises only after early sensory registration within the primary visual cortex.

An empirical investigation of market discipline and bank risk exposure

Due to principal-agency frictions, firms tend to engage in moral hazard behaviour. The banking industry is highly susceptible to the moral hazard problem. The reasons are twofold. First, the opaque nature of bank assets magnifies the information asymmetry condition which makes it difficult for outside investors to reliably assess bank risk profiles. Second, the web of government safety nets distorts the incentives of market participants to less vigilantly monitor and discipline bank risk-taking behaviour. Recurring bank crises, most recently the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) highlights the inherent weaknesses in banking systems around the world, particularly in developed countries in managing excessive risk taking by banks. With a focus on the G7 countries, this thesis empirically examines the impact of market discipline, in the form of uninsured liabilities, on bank risk. The thesis documents five key findings. First, and foremost, the evidence broadly supports the notion that market discipline helps reduce bank equity risk and credit risk. Second, there is some evidence of a convex relationship between market discipline and bank risk, but not in a way that undermines the key result above. Third, the impact of market discipline on bank risk is stronger in the presence of a risk-adjusted insurance premium, a potential source creating moral hazard. Fourth, with the support of bank capital, market discipline can impose stronger influences to help limit banks’ exposure to risk. Finally, there is evidence that market discipline has a greater impact on bank risk in the post-crisis period. This thesis provides evidence which should help weaken the reluctance of bank regulators to encourage market discipline – a reluctance born out of a concern that excessive reaction of the market during bad times can undermine banking stability.

An evaluation of a brief parenting discussion group for parents with difficulty in coping with teenager’s emotion

Emotions regulation is essential for teenager’s healthy and successful development. Adolescents who have difficulties in regulating their affects are at greater risk of having various negative outcomes. As parents play an important role in adolescence development, family intervention programs emerged and have persistently shown to be effective. One example is the Teen Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. However, due to the time commitment and cost, parents who are struggling with teenager’s issues usually do not participate in these interventions. In order to address these barriers, a Discussion Group paradigm is proposed. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether this brief intervention is effective in improving parenting skills and teenagers’ well-being. The participants consisted of 20 parents with adolescent ranged from 12 to 15-year-old. They were concerning with the emotional problems of their teenager children. Parents were randomly allocated to either the intervention condition (a 2-hour discussion group) or the waitlist condition. It was predicted that at post-intervention, parents in the intervention condition would report significantly fewer emotional problems of their teenage children, less use of dysfunctional parenting practices, greater parental self-efficacy, improvements in parent-teenager relationship and parental psychological functioning than parents in the waitlist condition. Contrary to previous findings, after intervention, there was no significant difference between groups in all dependent measures. Limitations and implications were discussed. And finally, suggestions for future research were provided to further investigate whether this type of brief program is sufficient to improve parents and teenager outcomes.

Objective: Behavioural parenting programs, such as the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, are effective in changing child behaviour problems and dysfunctional parenting styles. However, current methods of administering even brief parenting interventions cannot reach every parent. The current study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a radio series in Brisbane that aired parenting advice based on Triple P. Method: Parents of children aged 2 to 10 years, with concerns about their child’s behavioural or emotional adjustment were recruited. 97 parents were randomly assigned to either an intervention or waitlist control condition. The mean age of parents was 37.11 years and were predominantly mothers, and the mean age of children was 6.05 years. All parents completed pre-intervention questionnaires. Parents in the intervention condition listened to 7 Triple P podcasts online over 2 weeks and were given a further 2 weeks to implement the strategies they had learned. Four weeks after completing the pre-intervention questionnaire all participants completed the post-intervention questionnaire. Results: The results found significant differences between the conditions, such that parents in the intervention condition improved on measures of child behavioural and adjustment problems, parental self-efficacy and parenting style from pre- to post-intervention, significantly more than parents in the control condition. Conclusion: These results suggest that brief radio and online behavioural parenting programs are effective and have the potential to reach a wider proportion of parents experiencing disruptive child behaviour problems. Limitations, clinical significance and future research suggestions are discussed.

An everyday balancing act: The efficacy of a brief intervention for working parents to prevent the effects of work and family conflict

Empirical research has supported the effectiveness of Workplace Triple P and its ability to provide coping skills for parents to manage parental and occupational stress and decrease work and family conflict. The present study adds to the literature by aiming to investigate the effectiveness of a less intensive seminar version of the Workplace Triple P program. This randomised control trial applied a 2 (intervention condition: Workplace Triple P, Waitlist Control) by 3 (Time: pre-intervention, post-intervention and 3 month follow up) repeated measures longitudinal design. One hundred and forty eight working parents were recruited from across Brisbane. Participants randomised to the intervention condition received two 90-minute seminars held at the University of Queensland. The seminars covered strategies for balancing work and family, such as stress management, and positive parenting, such as effective discipline methods. It was hypothesised that, compared to the waitlist condition, the intervention condition would report: lower levels of work-to-family and family-to-work conflict, increased parental and occupational efficacy, lower levels of stress, higher levels of work-family enrichment, lower use of lax, overreactive and verbose parenting styles and lower levels of child conduct and emotional problems. To test the significance of the results, a series of Mixed Factorial ANOVAs at Time Two and Repeated Measures ANOVAs at Time Three were used. Hypotheses were supported in the areas of work-to-family conflict, parental and occupational efficacy, stress, parenting styles and emotional problems in children. Implications of this research, such as population level improvements in child behaviour and access to parental services, as well as future research opportunities, will be discussed.

An Examination of the Joint Role of Control and Proactive Personality in Determining Responses to a Work Simulation

In today’s job market, proactive individuals are in high demand because of their active approach to the work they face. Yet, little is understood about how proactive people react to demanding situations in the workplace and what leads them to experience work-related stress. Taking a job design and person-environment fit approach, this thesis aimed to investigate the effects of increasing or decreasing control on affective task reactions (i.e. tension-anxiety, effort, and satisfaction), and to examine how these differed between individuals with low and high levels of proactive personality. A sample of first year psychology students (N=154) each completed two trials of an email inbox activity with either an increase, decrease, or no change in control. As predicted, results found that for those high in proactive personality, an increase in control was associated with more effort and satisfaction towards the task. Increasing control did not affect how low proactive individuals responded to the task. Contrary to hypotheses, decreasing control did not influence affective task reactions for neither low nor high proactive individuals. Possible explanations for the lack of change in affective responses following a decrease in control are provided. The results are discussed with possible future directions and the practical implications of the findings.
