The age factor: Does personal wisdom predict follower perceptions of transformational leadership at different ages? http://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:276341 Transformational leadership is desired since it enables impressive follower outcomes. Within an organizational setting it is sought after due to its positive effects on employee loyalty, commitment and satisfaction. Current research has not examined the effects of age and leaders’ ability to be wise on transformational leadership. The present study investigates how leaders’ personal wisdom is associated with their followers’ perceptions of their ability as transformational leaders. Additionally, the leaders’ age was examined to determine if age moderates this relationship. A mail out, door-to-door hand outs and snowball sampling was utilised to collect spiritual leaders from a variety of faiths and small business owners or managers. In total 80 leaders and 192 followers were analysed across the two samples. Leaders filled out questionnaires measuring their personal wisdom and age. 1-3 of the leaders’ followers completed a measure of their leaders’ transformational leadership. It was hypothesised that there would be a positive relationship between leaders’ personal wisdom and their follower’s perception of them as transformational leaders. In line with leadership categorization theory(Lord, Foti & De Vader, 1984) it was hypothesised that age would moderate this relationship such that wise older leaders would be rated as more transformational than wise younger leaders or unwise leaders regardless of age due to age stereotypes. Results indicate that wisdom predicted overall transformational leadership and the sub-dimensions of inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation, whilst idealised influence approached conventional levels of statistical significance. The Austin Maze: A marker of right temporal lobe function in epilepsy patients? http://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:276407 The Austin Maze (AM) is a neuropsychological test that requires participants to learn a hidden pathway through a maze. Impaired performance on the AM has been demonstrated in patients with right temporal lobe damage. This study assessed the sensitivity of the AM as a specific marker of right temporal lobe function, in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Evidence has shown that patients with left TLE and left hippocampal sclerosis (HS) have impaired verbal memory. The assessment of memory impairments in patients with right TLE however, is less conclusive. This study investigated the effect of right versus left TLE on AM performance. The AM was administered to sixteen left TLE patients, eighteen right TLE patients, and thirty-four age and gender matched controls. The results showed that right TLE patients made significantly more AM errors compared to both left TLE patients (p = .004) and controls (p = .001). Left TLE patients also made significantly more AM errors than controls (p = .02). The effect of group (left TLE versus right TLE) as a function of HS (presence versus absence) on AM performance was also investigated. There was a main effect of group (p = .02), and the main effect of HS approached significance (p = .07). There was however, no interaction between TLE patient group and HS. AM scores were also correlated with additional neuropsychological tests. These regions are called monocular occlusion zones. The present study aimed to examine, using phantom stereograms (Gillam & Nakayama, 1999), how binocular rivalry might manifest in monocular occlusion zones not supported by an explicit surface. Over two experiments, 19 participants reported the frequency and duration of monocular feature suppression and perceived depth for three variations of a phantom stereogram. Of these variations only one fully satisfied the geometric relationships consistent with a near occluding surface. It was hypothesised, in line with the geometric consistency of each stimulus, that a greater frequency and duration of depth, and a lower frequency and duration of suppression, would be reported when viewing an arrangement consistent with occlusion, compared to an arrangement inconsistent with occlusion. Results supported predictions of depth perception, showing significant differences where hypothesised. Predictions of suppression were not supported. Instead geometric consistency did not influence overall rivalry. Further analysis did however reveal differences in the manifestation of rivalry as a function of stimulus validity. It was concluded that while geometric validity did not eliminate binocular rivalry in these stimuli, it did alter the features that were suppressed.
