Environmental Influences on Mate Preferences and Sexual Selection

Based on evolutionary theory, previous research has found that environmental factors, such as environmental threats or mating feedback, correlate with shifts in mate preferences or sexual strategy. However, no study to date has attempted to manipulate these environmental factors in a human sample. This was the aim of the current research and two studies were conducted. Study 1 investigated the role of threats in the environment on mate preferences. Female participants (N = 65) were primed with an environmental threat (either a pathogen, resource, or an unrelated threat), then asked to construct their ideal partner by investing points in traits that were either indicative of having “good-genes” or being a “good-dad”. Trends in spending patterns were found in the expected directions; however, the only the difference that was significant was that the pathogen-threat condition invested more in good-genes traits and less in good-dad traits compared to the resource-threat condition. In Study 2, male participants (N = 53) were given positive or negative feedback about their attractiveness in order to determine if mating feedback had an influence on sexual strategy. No significant differences were found however. These findings offer insight into a causal link between environmental factors and human mating behaviours, as well as the nature of these evolved mating mechanisms.

Evaluating education support plans: Useful or useless paperwork?

Past international research has found that children and young people in out-of-home care fare consistently worse in our education system compared to students in the wider population. How to successfully engage these vulnerable students in education has become increasingly important to academic researchers and policy-makers alike. The main policy initiative for improving the educational outcomes of children and young people in care in Queensland is the education support plan (ESP). The aim of the present study was to evaluate to what extent ESPs are effectively promoting, prioritizing and improving education for children and young people in care. Study one used a structured interview with a group of case coordinators at a non-government agency to gain a better understanding of the current use of ESPs and to assess whether the ESPs are being used and the policy effectively implemented. The results from study one indicated that there are major gaps between the intention of the ESP policy and its implementation. Study two used a number of standardized measures to investigate (a) how effectively ESPs are meeting the social and emotional needs of children and young people in care and (b) the extent of involvement that children and young people have in their plans. The participants were 63 children and young people (32 males and 31 females) in out-of-home care in Queensland. It was predicted that children/young people with ESPs would show more positive scores on the measures than children/young people who did not have an ESP. It was also predicted that children and young people who were involved in the creation of their ESP would show more positive scores on the measures compared to those children/ young people who were not involved in the creation of their ESP. The results of study two identified some trends to support the second hypothesis, however the statistical data was insufficient to sustain either hypotheses. The findings discuss possible improvements to the ESP policy, potential funding arrangements and the need for a broader review of the policy framework.

Evaluating the Frequency and Acceptability of Partner Behaviour Inventory in the context of the transition to parenthood

Researchers examining adjustment difficulties experienced by new parents during the transition to parenthood have found a general decline in marital satisfaction following the birth of the first child. Previous findings on relationship acceptance involving community and therapy-seeking couples suggested that it may be a useful concept in studying marital conflicts in new parents. However, the only evaluated measure of relationship acceptance, the Frequency and Acceptability of Partner Behaviour Inventory (FAPBI), had not been examined in context of transition to parenthood. This study aimed to examine: 1) the factor structure, reliability and content validity of the FAPBI in a sample of new parents; 2) the relationship between acceptability ratings, behavioural frequency, behaviour types and global relationship satisfaction and 3) gender differences in the FAPBI ratings. In this study, responses to an online assessment battery were collected from 95 couples who are expecting their first child. The results suggest that the FAPBI comprises two factors that are consistent across gender, which are positive and negative aspects of relationship quality. Also, it was found that couples with higher marital satisfaction tend to: 1) display higher acceptance towards their partner's behaviours, and 2) perceive their partner to be engaged in higher frequency of positive relationship behaviours and lower frequency of negative behaviours. Furthermore, no significant gender differences in acceptance and behaviour frequency were revealed. Results are discussed in terms of their support for the use of FAPBI in context of the transition to parenthood, theoretical and clinical implications, the study's limitation, suggestion for future research.

Examining the Catch-22 for working women: The role of stereotype threat in evaluations of women who are gender congruent versus gender incongruent

For women in the workplace the path to leadership appears to be a no-win situation. Working women face a Catch-22 as they can encounter discrimination regardless of adherence or non-adherence to traditional gender roles. This thesis aimed to determine if stereotype threat has a differential impact upon female employees’ evaluations of other women who are gender congruent vs. gender incongruent. In the present online study, male and female scientists employed in government departments (N=192) were either stereotype threatened or not stereotype threatened and then asked to read and rate descriptions of two target employees. All participants rated both a gender congruent (characteristically feminine) women and a gender incongruent (characteristically masculine) woman. Contrary to predictions stereotype threat did not have a differential impact upon evaluations. Implications of the current research are discussed and suggestions for future research are suggested.
