Determinants of bid outcome in a hostile environment http://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:277598 This thesis examines whether determinants may be used to distinguish successful from unsuccessful hostile takeover bids, and subsequently whether investing in successful takeover bids yields superior returns. The motivation for this study is derived from the perceived increase in takeover activity in the Australian market for corporate control in recent years, and from observations suggesting value may be derived from investing in hostile takeover targets likely tosucceed. Using a sample of 142 hostile takeover bids between January 2000 and December 2009, we find evidence to support the use of a bid outcome model with reported total outcome accuracy ranging between 80.28 and 70.42 percent. Furthermore, when we retrospectively use the prediction model as a basis for trade decisions we report average market adjusted returns ranging from 19.8 to 12.5 percent per transaction, comparatively a naïve model investing in all hostile takeovers returned 8.2 percent per transaction. All results are verified as robust through subsequent testing. These results indicate the use of the bid outcome model improves expected returns, however, the nature of this study makes these returns unfeasible as trade decisions would be made prior to generating the prediction by the model. This study stands to contribute to the current academic literature through the specific sample examined, and through the evaluative methods employed. Inhibition of return to fear-relevant targets http://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:275749 Selective attention is a crucial mechanism for daily functioning, as it allows us to filter irrelevant information from information we need. One of the ways selective attention is facilitated is through inhibition of return (IOR), which refers to a reflexive avoidance of pre-attended locations. The present study investigates whether emotion could override this mechanism, specifically whether fear-relevant stimuli could hold attention and hence attenuate the IOR effect. Two experiments were conducted to address this question. In Experiment 1, fear and neutral stimulus were paired together to eliminate abrupt onset effects. These stimuli were then placed in a spatial cueing paradigm. Twenty-two volunteers and first year psychology undergraduates were tested across all conditions. Contrary to predictions, the results showed no significant difference between stimulus conditions, suggesting the IOR effect was identical and there was no effect of fear. In Experiment 2, “targetness” of fear stimuli was increased and the memory load decreased. Sixteen volunteers and psychology undergraduates were asked to complete the same task as in Experiment 1. Results supported the hypothesis to a limited extent, showing no effective capture in the fear target condition, but a delayed disengagement effect was present in the fear distracter condition. In the laboratory, such capacity limitations are reflected in the Attentional Blink (AB) task: Participant‟s inability to report the second target (T2) in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream of distractors if it occurs within 200-500ms of the first target (T1). Over the last two decades this phenomenon has undergone intense investigation. A variety of different paradigms have been employed to examine the AB, all yielding similar T2|T1 accuracy time courses. Consequently, it has been assumed that these different tasks tap the same cognitive mechanisms, however to date this has not been tested. This thesis examined whether three prominent AB tasks: categorical (targets defined by alpha numeric category e.g., letters amongst digits), featural (targets defined by colour) and probe (T1 defined by colour, T2 by identity) paradigms reflect the same cognitive limitation. Using an individual differences approach, where 40 participants undertook 2 runs of each AB task it was observed that while there was high test-retest reliability for each paradigm, only AB magnitude for the featural and categorical tasks were correlated. Thus, it appears that categorical and featural AB tasks reflect distinct limitations relative to the probe paradigm.
